Milton, Georgia - Richard Johnson Farquhar 1932-2026

Richard Johnson Farquhar, known to all as 'Bud', died peacefully on January 29, 2026, at the age of 93 in Milton, Georgia, surrounded by his family.

Bud was born in Redlands, CA on November 18, 1932, to David Glann Farquhar and Louise Beaumont Farquhar and was baptized May 18, 1932, at First Presbyterian Church, Redlands, CA. Bud was the youngest of four boys-- brothers David Glann Farquhar (deceased), Willard Beaumont Farquhar (deceased), Phil Renfrew Farquhar (deceased). They grew up in a prominent orange growing family with a strong history of military service. Bud was an accomplished horse rider, hard-working student, and farm hand in the family orange grower's business, but his sites were set on something different. He met the beautiful Barbara Jean Penacho while in Redlands High School and they were married on February 8, 1958, for 60 wonderful years.

After high school, Bud joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and eventually served in Japan with his brother Phil, flying missions in search of submarines. After discharge from the Navy, Bud attended first Orange Coast College then San Diego State University where he earned a bachelor's degree and he and Barbara started their family.

After college, Bud went to work for the Sperry & Hutchinson Company and spent 33-years with S&H Green stamps. He was promoted several times, each with a move. Starting in California (San Diego, Palm Desert, Tustin), then Bud was the first of the family to move East, across the country to Wayland, MA, Pittsford N.Y. and finally settling into Westport, CT in 1976 where he lived until 2024. Dad and family may have moved from California, California never left Bud and the family.

Bud's last role at S&H was National Director, Sales & Marketing handling over 500 truck stop customers. It was this experience in the Truckstop industry that Bud found continued interest and success. In 1993, Bud joined Newport Communications as Publisher of Truckstop Plaza Magazine. In 1997, Bud owned and operated Stars & Stripes, LLC which produced annual national Class 8 truck beauty show competitions, including 13 consecutive years at the Mid-America Show in Louisville, KY, the largest truck show in the world.

Bud lived life on his terms and was incredibly active. He loved any outdoor work. From managing his own yard and landscaping at home or beach to firing up the snow blower and helping his family with their many projects. He was always doing several things at once and he never tired. Bud never forgot a face and was loved by employees, neighbors, service workers, friends, and family members. He was interested in people, a dedicated friend and never met a stranger.

Bud was a devoted and loving father to his three children and proud grandfather to his six grandchildren. He created countless memories of shared time together at Newport Beach, CA, visiting family in Redlands, CA, attending soccer matches for children and grandchildren throughout the years, attending dance and cheer events, band concerts, visiting every grandchild's college, and hosting family in their beloved Westport home. Bud is survived by son Richard Johnson Farquhar Jr. (Marietta, GA), wife Shelli and children Nathan (wife Marissa) (NY), Duncan (wife Sophia) (CO), and Ian Farquhar (CO); daughter Amy Lynn Farquhar Jackson (Milton, GA), husband Peter and children Austin (CO) Rhea and Sage (TN); daughter Lori Ann Farquhar (Milford, CT).

Graveside celebration of life with military honors and internment of ashes will be June 12, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Hillside Memorial Park, Redlands, CA where Bud will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Barbara Jean Farquhar. There will be a family gathering after the service.
