Mentone, CA - Sharon Kay Swan of Mentone, CA passed away February 6, 2026. She was 85.
Sharon was a California native who began and ended her life in Redlands Community Hospital. As a child she lived in Yucaipa, attending local public schools. She graduated from Redlands High School in 1958. After high school Sharon attended San Bernardino Valley College and worked as a bank teller in Redlands.
She married Richard Floyd in April 1961. Richard and Sharon first lived in Mentone and then moved to a new house in Sunnymead, Moreno Valley in 1965. Sharon was a homemaker who cared for her children, born in 1963 and 1965, for their first few years. While a homemaker, she took numerous adult education courses, most notably cake decorating which delighted her daughters. She was very creative throughout her life and made each season and holiday special. Sharon began a new career in 1975, taking a position as a library clerk at Alessandro Junior High School. During this time, she moved to Riverside but continued her library work in the Moreno Valley Unified School District, eventually transferring to March Mountain Continuation High School. While there she developed a program to encourage student mothers to read to their children. Sharon was an avid reader and shared the passion for books with her students and friends.
She received an AA degree from Riverside City College in 1978. In 1988, she purchased a cherished home belonging to her uncle since 1943 and moved back to Mentone where she lived until her death. Sharon received her BA degree from Cal State San Bernardino in 1990. Sharon was an activist for many causes including banning nuclear testing, Amnesty International, Habitat for Humanity, Citizens Action for Peace, Postcards to Voters, and Citizens' Climate Lobby. She believed in love, peace, social justice and environmental sustainability. Sharon enjoyed camping, hiking, mountain biking, birding, botanizing and genealogy. She traveled throughout the western states and as far as Australia to enjoy those activities and spend time with her family. She had a particular fondness for Yosemite. She was interested in local history and was a member of the Redlands Historical Society. She volunteered to digitize grave records for Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands.
Sharon retired in December 2000 and was delighted to become a grandmother in 2002. She spent 2-3 days a week with her grandson from his birth through high school, providing care and companionship after school. Sharon was a gentle, loving, caring, soft spoken person with a sense of humor and twinkle in her eye. She was preceded in death by her parents H. Warren Swan and Helen (Buehler) Swan.
She is survived by her daughters Sandra Floyd (husband David Bratt) and Margaret Floyd Becker (husband George Becker), her cherished grandson Jake Evans, Jake's father David Evans and her tabby cat Minnie. She will be missed and fondly remembered by family and many friends.
Sharon's remains will be interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands.
